Best Tips For Dressing Different Body Shapes

Want to know what you should be paying attention to the most when dressing your body shape?

I have coached thousands and thousands of women on dressing their body shape, all in effort to feel comfortable and confident in their clothes and bodies! With each body shape there are some things I find myself coaching on repeat. These are the call outs deliver the most balanced look on each shape.

As a reminder the 5 body shapes we coach to here at Fashion Fix are apple, straight, hourglass, bottom curvy, and top curvy. We coach dressing for your size differently than we coach dressing for your shape. You can learn more about that here. We also have resources when navigating petite and tall, which you can view here.

Let’s get into what we are here to talk about today, call out fit points for each body shape!

Apple (aka round)

My number one call out for apple shape gals is to be careful of oversized fits. As an apple shape your curviest part of your body is your midsection. It’s easy to want to cover or camouflage that with oversized fits, or boyfriend fits. These cuts get too big in the shoulder and end up feeling and looking frumpy and dumpy.

Straight (aka rectangle)

My number one call out for straight shape gals is to not worry about length of tops, but be aware of how close or loose something fits to the body. When you wear a top that fits long, at or below the hips, and it fits close or tight to the body it can give you a tubular look. When you wear a top that fits short, above the hips or at the waist, and it fits loose on the body it can look oversized and frumpy.

Top Curvy (aka inverted triangle)

My number one call out for top curvy gals is to lean into open necklines that are horizontal, not just vertical . Necklines like ballet or boatneck, or even off the shoulder, will look fabulous on you. You will find a fit that compliments your curves!

Bottom Curvy (aka pear)

My number one call out for bottom curvy gals is to be careful to not wear tops that fit too long. When you wear a top that covers the hips we lose that separation from your top and bottom half. When you wear tops that hit at or above the hips you will find a more balanced fit and look on your shape.

Hourglass

Hey hourglass gals, all you need to do is to review the call outs for top curvy and bottom curvy. Both those will apply to you!
